Tree Cozies, Idaho Botanical Garden, Boise, Land Art Exhibition March 2021
Cozie: a soft covering to keep something warm.
This installation is made from Wolf Lichen that I, and some very dear friends, collected in the fall of last year.
The lichen is mounted on strips of canvas and then sewn around each trunk. I played with porcelain by dipping lichen into liquid porcelain and firing it in the kiln. The white makes an interesting addition to the vivid green color.
I wanted to create a visual impact. In contrast to how lichen grows in nature I made the bands exact, something you would not expect out in the woods. The title “Tree Cozies” speaks to me. I believe we are stewards of this planet. It is our task to take care of what has been entrusted to us.
